• What we tile
Tile installation work we take on
Most tile that fails didn't fail at the tile. It failed at the substrate, the waterproofing or the layout. We do that part properly and the finish takes care of itself.
Shower tile installation
Walls, pans, benches and niches, built over a waterproofed assembly. The tile is what you see; the membrane under it is what keeps the wall dry.
Floor tile installation
Porcelain and stone floors in bathrooms, kitchens, entries and laundry rooms, laid over a flat, prepped substrate — which is what gives tile its best chance of staying put. Comparing it with wood or vinyl? See flooring installation.
Backsplash installation
Kitchen and bar backsplashes, laid out so the cuts land where they should — at the edges and outlets, not in the middle of the wall behind the range.
Natural stone installation
Marble, travertine and other natural stone. It's less forgiving than porcelain — softer, more variable, and it wants sealing — so it rewards being set by someone who has done it before. Often part of a bathroom remodel.
Feature walls and fireplaces
Tile and stone run floor to ceiling on a fireplace surround or an accent wall, where every joint is at eye level and the layout has to be right.
Mosaic, patterns and borders
Herringbone, hexagon, penny round and inlaid borders. Detailed layouts take longer to set, and we price that time honestly rather than rushing the cuts.
• How it works
How a tile installation runs
Step 01 · Consultation
We measure the area, look at what's behind and beneath it, and talk through tile, layout and grout.
Step 02 · Estimate and plan
A written estimate that lists substrate prep and waterproofing separately, because that's where corners usually get cut.
Step 03 · Prep and set
Substrate, waterproofing, then layout dry-fitted before anything is stuck down. Setting, then grout once the mortar has cured.
Step 04 · Walkthrough
We check the joints, the cuts and the edges with you, and tell you when it can get wet or be walked on.

Salt air and humidity are hard on a badly built shower, which is why we're particular about what goes on behind the tile here. Nearby but not on the list? Call and ask.

• Common questions
Tile and stone questions, answered
How much does tile installation cost?
It's priced by the square foot, but tile size and pattern change the labour a lot — a large-format porcelain floor sets far faster than a herringbone mosaic of the same area. Waterproofing and substrate prep are separate items, and we list them separately so you can see what you're paying for. We measure on site and the estimate is free.
Why do shower tiles crack or come loose?
Almost always because of what's underneath rather than the tile itself — movement in the substrate, no waterproof membrane, or the wrong mortar for the material. That's why our estimates itemise the prep. It's the invisible half of the job, and the half that decides how long the finished work lasts.
Can you tile over existing tile?
Sometimes on a floor, if the existing tile is sound, well bonded and flat, and the added height works at the doorways. In a shower we'd rather not — you're covering up whatever is failing behind it. We'll look and give you a straight answer instead of the convenient one.
Do you seal natural stone?
Yes, and natural stone genuinely needs it — marble and travertine are porous and will stain. We'll tell you which sealer suits the stone you've chosen and how often it should be redone, so it isn't a surprise a year later.
Do you supply the tile or do I buy it?
Plenty of clients pick and buy their own tile and we install it. If you'd rather we handled the sourcing, ask at the consultation and we'll tell you whether we can on your job. One tip whichever way you go: order enough overage for cuts and for future repairs, because dye lots change.
How long before I can use a newly tiled shower?
Mortar and grout both need to cure before the shower gets wet, and rushing it is a good way to undo careful work. We give you the specific timing for the products used on your job, in writing, before we finish up.
